Bye "That 70's Show"!

I would just like to say good-bye to one of my favorite TV shows. The first one I've watched from the beginning to the end. It was hilarious and, I know this sounds wrong since it is a sitcom but, the characters were inspiring, especially when I was in high school. I'll miss you 'That 70's show'!

That's a very good, informative article. I've dealt with basement flooding several times (http://anothermonkey.blogspot.com/2005/01/flood-day.html , http://anothermonkey.blogspot.com/2005/03/pumping-night-away.html ) and your article covers everything I've done and learned. (I kept reading it thinking "now mention the importance of storing things in plastic tubs...now don't forget to mention a dehumidifier...") Some friends of mine in Maryland would have been happy to have had your advice before their basement flooded last week. Can't wait to see what's next!

Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks for the shout-out! We'll get my clout up somehow!

No problem Jenni,
I figured we kind of started this project as a team. Plus it's the least I could do for all your editing help. Not to mention since I'm one of your favorite content producers, a hit to your page could be a hit to mine!

Hey, what happened to the link for Shopping for Shoes for Seniors?

My 72-year-old mother has a chronic shoe problem: she takes a 7 1/2 Slim, which is impossible to find in most major brands. (The shoes she's wearing now are marked "SAS" - does that brand sound familiar?) She's spent more than $90 for shoes that don't fit her right. It only just occurred to me that I knew someone in the blog world who might be able to give her some advice!

Was the "shoe shopping for seniors" blog enrty missing or was the link not working? I checked and the entry was there and the link worked. So I'm not sure what's going on there.

As for your mom's shoes, I have definitely heard of SAS, they are the best selling brand at my store! We carry just about everything they make and I have quite a bit of experience with them. They are just about the only company left that make slims.
I might have a suggestion or two that could help your mom's shoe problem. I was just curious what style of SAS she is wearing and why they don't fit her right. I hope I can help.

Weird - "Shoe shopping" isn't showing up on my Live Bookmarks. I can only get to it from the main page.

Even SAS Slims are slightly too wide for her feet. She used to swear by Dexters, which she thinks were imported from Japan, but she can't find them anymore. I've wondered if there would be Japanese lines that would fit her better, what with all that foot-binding and stuff. Any ideas along those lines?

Okay about the shoe problem. We used to carry Dexters at our store. They are actually an American based company (meaning their shoes our designed here and there company headquarters is here and they sell mostly to US stores) but their shoes are not made in the US. I'm not exactly sure where they are made now but I do know that they no longer carry slims(I didn't know that they ever did but I'm assuming that is what your mother had).
Anyway, Japanese shoes would likely run slimmer than American shoes since they do have narrower feet, just as European shoes run wider than American brands because they have wider feet. Unfortunately American brands would run the same even if they were made in Japan. I'm not really aware of any Japanese brand shoes except for one called the Worldwalker, which is an athletic walking shoe. Also I think that like European shoes, Japanese shoes may only come in one width, which would likely be slimmer than a US medium but I'm not sure if it would be slimmer than a US slim. Now in the US there are chains of Japanese stores called Mitsuwa that sell Japanese everything including food, clothing and lots of other stuff(It's kind of like a Meijer but I'm not sure if you have those where you are at). So if she wanted to find Japanese shoes to try that might be a good place to check but I'm not sure where the closest one is to where you live. (I'm guessing they have a store locator on their website. You also might be able to see if there would be another Japanese clothing/shoe store near you).
There is another brand that carries slims( I know I said that SAS was about it but this is a brand that our store is newly acquiring so I didn't really think of it). The brand is called Munro. As with SAS it is a US brand that is made in the US as well, so I'm not sure that it will fit better. I do know that this particular company lets you search for brands by last style ( in case you don't know a last is the mold for the shoe). So once you find a shoe that fits you can purchase other shoes with similar last. This company also makes shoes on combination last which means the heel of the shoe is suppose to be significantly more narrow than the front of the shoe, so if your mom has trouble mostly with the heel that might be helpful. Munros are sold nationwide so they should be available where you are at. If your mom does look into she should ask a sales associate to bring her out styles with the different lasts so see if any of them work for her since they will all fit differently.
General things that might help is that shoes that tie or buckle can be better because they can be pulled tight on the feet. She could also try filling her shoes with an insole, heel pads, tongue pads or meditarsal pads. It might help somewhat but it really depends on the shoe and how bad the fit is.
Sorry for the lenghthy explanation. I hope some little part of it helps.

Ros Hommerson also has really open sizing. I can't remember, but they might make slims? (Probably not, but it's popping up in my head like they do.) I'll check the catalog on Friday.

I think you are right Jenni. I think they may make slims. I looked for a website and couldn't find one which may make it hard to find a place that sells them if they do. We'll have to check the catalog.

I just found a website that carries Ros Hommersons and they do infact make 4A(slims). Ros Hommerson are best described as basic dress shoes but they do carry some casuals. All of their styles come in the same size range so all shoes should be made in slim.
